Located well within the “tropics”, the sunny Northshore of Maui is largely affected by the northwestern tradewiinds, known locally as “the trades”. These winds accelerate along Maui’s north shore due to the “venture effect” as they pass between Halekala and the West Maui mountains. These brisk winds, combined with large winter surf, have made Maui a Mecca for many water sports including windsurfing and kite surfing.
The trades have another beneficial effect in lowering the humidity and “apparent” temperature. Just as “wind-chill” in the wintertime makes it seem colder than the thermometer reads, the trades make the warm Hawaiian weather very comfortable.
Winter in Hawaii often sees less tradewinds, resulting in more apparent humidity. South, or “kona” winds reverse normal wind direction and can sometimes be quite strong. These kona winds often bring kona storms to the southern, dryer areas of Maui where dry-land native forests depend on this moisture to thrive.
Over the open ocean the annual rainfall is between 25 and 30 inches per year. However the islands can receive over 15 times that amount due to geographical formations including hills, valleys and canyons, which can trap moisture-laden trade clouds which then create microclimates.
Speckelsville enjoys a flat location close to the ocean, making it ideally suited for living.
