Maui Island

Maui is an island, which was formed millions of years ago by two volcanoes.  Haleakala to the east is the bigger of the two, with an elevation of just over 10,000 feet.  The Haleakala National Park is the most-visited national park in the United States.  Haleakala has climate zones from sub-alpine to tropical, descending down the east flanks of the mountain to the Kipahulu area near Hana.

The older, East Maui Mountains (“Pu’u Kukui”) form the west end of the Island, with a lava and sand isthmus connecting the two volcanoes. The total area of Maui is approximately 728 square miles, or 1887 square kilometers.
