Maui oct. 16 2008:

Hello This is a note to anyone out there that can take some time to help me with a fundraising project for my kids school. This program cost you nothing, it's amazing! eScrip is the largest electronic fundraising program where participating merchants contribute each time you make a purchase using one of these cards! There are no receipts to collect, no vouchers or certificates to buy, no hassles for you - and every purchase counts toward our school! All you have to do is take a few minutes while you are surfing the web and go to www.escrip.com to sign up your cards, the school name is Doris Todd Memorial Christian School and the group id# is 141900066.

You may wonder, is this safe if you send in the credit card information, the answer is YES. ESI (eScrip) has contracted with a national processor who provides state-of-the-art technology for administration of the eScrip program. ESI's process involves flagging these card numbers for program use. The participating retailers provide the processor with the purchase information so a donation amount can be applied. ESI's systems have met the strict requirements of the participating merchants in the area of security, safety and confidentiality.

So please take a few minutes of your time while you are surfing and sign up, it truly is easy and is for a good cause!!!! If you have any questions please let me know.

All the best
Micah

SYLT 2008 UPDATE 02.10.2008:

Another day here in Sylt and it was as wild and crazy as ever. It looked as if Waves might be the go then freestyle then race, it was all over the place. The race crew finally decided on racing and it was some exciting racing that is for sure!!! The wind was anywhere from 10-30knots straight on shore with waves in the 4-6foot range. It was a pretty hard call what sail to take out as the wind would change within about a 5 minute window, so at some point during the day everyone was in full survival mode. In the end the biggest survivors were Josh, Ross, Antoine, Kevin, Cedric, Cyril, Patrick and Peter V these were the guys that made it to the final. The Queen survivors(since they don't want to be called losers now) were Bjoern, Robby, Gonzalo, Julien, Andrea C., Taty, Ben and Sylvain. Both very stacked heats and exciting to watch with the irregular wind conditions, well regular for Sylt I guess. In the end there were some very exciting gybe sequences going on out there from my position on the beach it was Robby Swift that had the best gybes of the day and this proved to get him a very solid victory in the Queen final ahead of the likes of Ben and Bjoern. In the Kings final in was Antoine who had the lead at the second mark but even he had some troubles gybing in these rough conditions and he went down missing the booms on the sail flip. This allowed Josh who was hot on his heels up to this point to slide into the leaders spot and he finished up with two solid gybes to finish in first for his first ever slalom round win. In second was Ross, he was extremely happy with this result as this gave him a very solid overall event lead. I was able to catch up with him before the days racing started to try to learn a bit more about him, here is what he came up with

MB:When and where were you born?

RW:15 January, 1980, Isle of Wight

MB:So you are white trash then?

RW:Yeah

MB:How are things here in Sylt for you this year?

RW:Uhm, so far going pretty good made the one final that we had. Important things is to get to those finals, you know give it 110%. The weather really isn't very nice though, not allowing us to do as much racing as we are supposed to but that is the way of the world.

MB:What is the most controversial thing that has happened so far in Sylt?

RW:Not calling off races early enough, not accepting the 7 knot rule properly. If someone stops planning then they should cancel it.

MB:Have you ever been arrested? Where and Why?

RW:Yeah. On the Isle of Wight for drink driving, drunk and disorderly and criminal damage, I was kiciking in some cars.

MB:Are you Argentinian or British?

RW:British.

MB:What do you think of countryman Robby Swift running into me and breaking my leg?

RW:Bit out of order wasn't it, i don't think he did it on purpose, even though he did get some money for it. Bit of bummer for you missing out on the rest of the season, would have been nice to have beaten you in the overall without the handicap. Shows a bit the flaws in the no rules racing, the downside of.

MB:How do you feel about the state of the world economy?

RW:I think that maybe the US and Britian have brought this upon themselves a little bit, my mom said never to stretch yourself beyond reason, if you stretch yourself beyond reason you could lose everything. Be a realist!!

MB:If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why?

RW:Maui or some small island with some sick surf break and some good windsurfing with my friends, sort of like Sylt.

MB:What do you think about George Bush doing another four year term as US president?

RW:I think that the American people have woken up to him, he can't legally, the American people wouldn't stand for it. Time to give over the reins and let someone else F it up.

MB:How do you like your chances of finishing on the podium this year in racing?

RW:Realistically probably not going to happen this year but just to be in the top five is a big step forward, giving me a lot more confidence and hopefully can get some more support to help break into that top three position.

So there you have it, they finished this one round about 5pm and decided to go for some waves, in the end they finished the last heat of waves at 7:18pm, it was getting a bit tough to see what the guys were doing on the water due to the lack of sun light........Tommorrow is supposed to be a windy morning so the wave guys will be back on it at 8am, lets hope for some good conditions to get a few more wave heats in as it is looking a bit less likely that the waves will get conditions but you never know here in Sylt.

Oh yeah here is a photo of Ross enjoying his stay here in Sylt and Robby getting ready to dominate!!!

Aloha
Micah

SYLT 2008 UPDATE 01.10.2008:

Well four days down here in Sylt and still only one race finished and one single of mens freestyle. Forecast is still looking good for more wind but you never know here in Sylt what may come down the pipe. The freestyle was awesome though!!! For the cold and rain these guys are sure impressive, must be pretty hard to remain so flexible while being so cold!!! In the end it was Spanish Sensation Antxon Oteagui of Neil Pryde and JP that proved to be the best of all on this day in Sylt. I talked with him a bit afterwards and he was very stoked to start off with such a great result, he did say it was a bit hard in these cold conditions and his back suffered a slight tweak in one of his high flying displays but he said that it was nothing that was going to slow him down and anyway once you are cold you don't feel much anyway!!!!

For me I have just been doing some networking around the beach catching up with what is going on around the tour and what is happening on the inside of the PWA. During lunch I had a chance to lay some questions at WIndsurfing World Cup Superstar Nik Baker, who has been a fixture on the tour for a long time and has been at the top his entire career.

When were you born?
1971

How are you feeling in Sylt this year?

all good, its my 20th year here which is pretty amazing really. i really enjoy the challenging conditions we often have in sylt.

What do you think about countrymate Robby Swift running into me and breaking my leg?

this is typical bad luck, to be so badly injured is one thing but to be run over by your team mate is pretty unfortunate. at least he was sorry and you will be able to use that against him in the future

How do you like your chances of a podium finish this year?

well that is a hard question. the level now is so high with all the upcoming youngsters. if it is starboard tack i would prefer it but we will see what we get.

What do you think about the world economies situations?

not too good really. it seems things are on a bad direction downwards which is really bad for a sport such as windsurfing. it is not a cheap sport to do and normally people save money on pleasantries.

If you could vote in the US presidential elections who would you vote for?

Obama

What do you think of the trans-american highway?

no idea

How do you like running Mistral?

i don't run it i just develop the products along with mark nelson which is really great fun. we have worked very hard these past few years and i think our range has really improved.

Anything good happen here in Sylt so far for you?

nothing to exciting really. the usual stuff. it is great to see so many people still coming to sylt to see us guys perform. this shows windsurfing is still a great and popular sport

What is the worst thing that has happened here in Sylt this year?

the light winds have been hard for the racers with going in and out trying to fit in the heats between the gust but this is windsurfing and really it is not to bad just more frustrating. luckily the forecast is looking really good.

Thanks very much to Nik for his time. Well back to my position here in Sylt I will try to keep you updated on what is happening here and get you some behind the action info and views.

I did just get a call that my new JP boards just arrived at my house in Maui so I am now looking forward to getting back even more, back on the water with new JP slalom boards and the latest Neil Pryde protos what a great way to come back!!!!

Aloha

SYLT 2008 UPDATE 08.09.2008:

Hello All from lovely Sylt,
Yes I am in Sylt and no I am not competing. It was close but with less than a week to go till the start of Sylt my leg was not healed enough for the docs to give me the go ahead to push it on the race course. I have been doing lots of rehab and the mobility is getting much better but is just not quite there yet. My bone feels great no pain or funny feelings just not grown quite enough yet. The main thing the docs and Scott say is that my perenial muscles are very weak from not being mobile for so long as well as not having any weight bearing, but with the last two and a half weeks of training that I have been doing they are getting better and better every day. I still walk with a bit of a limp but this is also getting better daily.

So why you ask would I come to Sylt, well I truly missed the wonderful weather and beautiful beaches that this wonderful little Island has to offer. Ok that may not be entirely true, the weather can be lovely here but 9 out of 10 days it is usually very cold and rainy but hey that is different from Maui so it is nice for a change. The beaches I can say are very nice but the sub freezing temperatures don't really add to their beauty. I am having fun trying my hand at a little bit of announcing during the racing though and I am trying to get my face out there as much as possible and as much as I can help out my team mates, as long as it isn't raining......

It has been a very slow start here this year after three days of the comp there is still only one round of racing complete. Blame this on the weather mostly but also on the slow reaction time of the race committee(to put it politely). I am not try to be critical of them they do have a hard job but I can truly see a lot of areas where improvements can be made. I am a bit down about not being able to race and having to stand around and watch but truthfully this has been a very cold and slow year so far so in that sense I am not to down. The forecast is looking up though, at least for getting some results in, the wind is supposed to increase for the rest of the event but so is the rain and the temp is supposed to decrease. So depending on how you look at this there is certainly something good in there somewhere.

This one round was very eventful though with many top names bowing out, Antoine, Kevin, Josh, Ben, and Bjoern nearly lost out as well when he stopped planning in his heat while leading and everyone came past him but luckily for him after the race was finished they ended up canceling it anyway, if only Antoine could have been so lucky having the same thing happen to him but the heat didn't get cancelled. In the end Sylvan Mussilmani ended up winning the round followed by Arnon and then Bjoern.

While slaloming around the beach I had a chance to catch up with fellow JP/Neil Pryde team mate and leg breaker Robby Swift to get his views on the event so far as well as some worldly topics that may or may not interest:

So Robby how are you feeling so far here in Sylt?

I had a bad first day in slalom. I managed to sail over the start line during the last minute of the sequence of the heat before mine and so was disqualified from the whole round. I was going fast and we were finally starting on port tack, which is my faster side so I was broken to have to watch the rest of the round from the beach. I feel good about the waves though and am looking forward to trying to get up onto the podium.

How are you feeling about having broken my leg and seeing me sit on the beach?

I have no remorse. I blame it on the French. F-91

Anything really stupid happen in the racing so far?

The way they decided 10 minutes after Bjorn's heat that the wind wasn't actually strong enough after all and so they needed to re-run it and allow him to have another chance. Nothing to do with the 10 minutes that he was in the judging tower complaining of course.

How about the race crew have they done anything really stupid so far?

Aside from laying the course completely wrong and allowing some races to count when people had to tack to make the marks, allowing Bjorn's heat to be resailed because he didn't qualify, sending us out to try to race all day when there was no wind and then cancelling when the wind finally picked up, they have done a fairly spectacular job.

Who do you have your money on to win the event in Racing, Waves, Freestyle and Womens Waves?

Ross Williams racing, Gollito Estredo Freestyle, Victor Fernandez waves

How about fuel prices how do you feel about the rising cost?

I feel that it is a joke how quickly the fuel prices can rise with the price of oil, and then not fall again when the price of oil falls again.

If you could vote in the US presidential election who would you choose and why?

I have no idea really. I would probably vote for the Democrats as I believe that they are similar to the Conservative party in the UK, who I would support if I voted there. I could be completely wrong about that though so it is lucky I am not legally allowed to vote.

If you could meet one person from anytime in history to the present who would it be?

I already met her.

How do you like your chances for a podium finish in the waves?

I like them a lot better than I did last year, I have trained a lot and am sailing well. Sylt is a tricky place so anything can happen, but if I sail to y full potential, there are only a couple of people who I feel could beat me and they would have to sail to their full potential too, which is hard. Really it all comes down to the way you sail in your heat and the way the wind and waves turn out during that heat, so my fingers are crossed.

How was your 700g of meat from last night?

I would probably order the bigger steak next time as I was still a little hungry afterwards. It was delicious.

You can check more about Robby at www.robbyswift.com

Well there you have it I hope to get some more interviews during the week if you have any requests on persons or topics let me know via my website email address, info@micahbuzianis.com

MICAH'S Leg UPDATE 08.09.2008:

New World Speed Record for American and Team Black Dog Leader Rob Douglas set in Luderitz on Friday September 19, 2008, 49.84knots. Way to go for the Big Bad DOG!!!!! Not to bad for only kite speed sailing for about four months!!!! Bummed that a windsurfer is not holding the record anymore but extremely stoked for Rob and his crew, couldn't happen to a nicer more deserving guy!!!! Lets give him his due and wish him the best of luck for the rest of the period in Luderitz!!!!

Cheers
Micah

MICAH'S Leg UPDATE 08.09.2008:

I just did an interview with my good friend Alex Morales at www.miamiwindsurfing.com check it out if you get a chance. I am getting some more xrays tomorrow on my leg to see how it is coming and plan on making my decision on Sylt in the next couple of days. My leg is feeling really good, not to much atrophy and the muscles feel pretty supple. The biggest hold up right now is the mobility of my foot and ankle, they are both a bit sore and tender from being in a cast for six weeks. They are getting better day by day and I have been walking around without crutches, still slow but getting better. It is all up to my doctors now so we will see what the pics look like and what they say......

Aloha
Micah

MICAH'S Leg UPDATE 15.08.2008:

Here are the latest pics from my leg. Docs say the healing is looking good and the alignment is coming back. That is the positive news the negative side is that I have to keep my cast on for another week or two so I am looking into getting something to go over it so I can go swimming. It also looks like I will have to stay on crutches for another three weeks. I guess with this type of fracture I need to stay non weight bearing for a little while longer. So i guess it is more upper body stuff and more practice time on the crutches. I am pretty bummed I won't be in Egypt next week for my clinic at the Harry Nass center in Dahab:((( I know they are going to have a good time though, they have lots of good people there and good ones coming in for the clinic. Plus they have the perfect conditions and the perfect set up there, I am sure everyone will have a great time and learn tons!! They are also going to have a great wedding party for Harry and Elke at their new house, this is truly going to be a huge event sad I am going to miss this!!!! Stay tuned to see how it all goes.....

MICAH'S Leg UPDATE 12-08-2008:

Here is an update for my website finally........

It has been two and half weeks since I have been back on Maui and man am I caught up on what is going on in the sports world!!! It has been a lot of time on the couch but luckily there was some good entertainment on like the Brett Favre saga, somehow I thought maybe the Broncos would step up and take him..........then there was some good golf on the PGA was a great finish, Phil wasn't around but it looked like Sergio was going to pull it off but in the end Padraig is having a great year and pulled it off. Now finally the Olympics is on so this is really making the time fly by, there is so much coverage this year it is great. Plus there have been so many good stories and the USA is doing well so it makes it much more compelling. All this is great and all to make the time go by faster but I am really getting frustrated not being able to walk around or be very mobile.

Right after I broke my leg in Fuerte I was on the phone to my doctors back in the US, Canada and Austria talking about my xrays and MRI's to see how bad it really was and see what my next step would be. All were in agreement that the break was not very bad and not displaced far enough to warrant any surgeries so I made my plans to head straight back to Maui and start the rest and recovery with the family. Surprisingly the flights back were not to bad, I had Captain Greg and KP flying most of the way with me so they helped out as much as they could. Checkin in Fuerte went very smoothly and they had just started a new wheel chair service so I took full advantage of this and they took excellent care of me. Throughout the trip everyone was very helpful in the airlines, we did have a grumpy taxi driver in London who almost ran me over while I was trying to get in the car but beyond this the trip was smooth. I flew with 17 windsurfing bags back to Maui but didn't have to touch one of them, the broken leg card worked well!!!

The day after I arrived home I went to the doctor to get some more xrays taken to make sure nothing had moved on the trip home, all looked good so they put me in a permanent cast and said go home and sit around for four weeks then come back and see us. So I have made it two weeks and I am ready to get this cast off. I am going tomorrow to get some more xrays and hopefully be able to get my permanent cast off in a day or two and move into an aircast that I can take off and go in the pool to do some work as well as work on some range of motion stuff while I watch more Olympics. My goal right now is to be able to start putting weight on it in two weeks and get back on the water by mid September. I know it will probably be just some light sailing to begin with but at least be able to do some back and forth work with Pieter. I just have to take it in about two week chunks right now and get an xray and see what the doc says. I am at least becoming more mobile since the pain has subsided when I have my leg down but it is still not quite what I would like, pretty hard to do to much on the crutches.

I am positive on my recovery though I have some very good people helping me out and I already am feeling motivated to get out there and work harder on everything. It really wakes you up when something is taken away from you and I will make the most of it. Mentally I am feeling pretty good as well, it was very hard to go down in Fuerte being so close to a second place finish but sometimes these are the breaks. I have had a pretty fortunate career injury wise, this is the first injury I have had that has taken me out of competition. I am frustrated watching Turkey happen as I know I had good gear for this event this year, and looking at the results from the first round makes it even tougher......but like I said I am feeling like I want it even more and I can't wait to get back into the groove and start putting all the pieces back together. I will let you know how the xrays look and what the prognosis is for the next couple of weeks.

Here you can see the last Xray:

MICAH BREAKS HIS LEG IN FUERTE 2008

Martin Brandner reports:

Micah was in great form - after 3 days of racing and 8 eliminations completed he was in second with quite a big gap between him and Bjorn Dunkerbeck in 3rd position. Antoine Albeau started to feel Micah’s breath in his neck and began to make a few mistakes. So Micah had big plans for the last 2 remaining days of racing. In elimination 9 he made it into the final again and scored a 4th place which secured his 2 position further. In the semi final of elimination 10 Micah is leading at the first buoy starts his jibe but then he stops his turn and keeps going straight and sails straight downwind. He obviously is in great pain and hardly makes it back to the beach.

The JP team on the beach gets rather hectic. Micah comes back to the beach and tells us he has really bad pain in his lower leg and he heard something pop when he initiated his jibe. Despite the pain he wants to try and compete in the next elimination which starts within an hour. We have a physio therapist look at his leg, put and put it in ice, he gets an injection against the pain, his ankle gets taped up and off he goes for the next elimination. He is again in a good position at the first mark but it is again impossible for him to jibe and he comes back to the beach.

What happened?

We take him to the hospital to find out what is wrong and after 30 minutes we get the shocking news. His leg is broken (fibula) and probably was at least partly broken since he crashed with another rider ten days ago in Gran Canaria where he was hit by a fin right on top of his ankle where his foot is broken now. Back then he got 5 stitches because he had a pretty bad cut - but otherwise he thought he was fine - even though the pain in his leg never really went away.

So Micah did 9 races with an at least partly broken leg and he was still in 2nd position at the end of yesterday even though he missed two eliminations. What an incredible performance of this unbelievable athlete.

Micah is back to the hospital right now to have an MRI done to see if there might be any other damage.
We wish Micah all the very best - may he recover as fast as possible.

Colgate Pwa Sylt 2007 update 28 nov.2007

Well the last two days here in Sylt were a pure waiting game, it came very close yesterday as we did start the losers final from the first day of racing and it was cancelled a couple of times. Finally at around 5pm everyone was release except for the sailors in the losers final and they were finally able to complete it with Bernd Flessner winning the heat easily. However today was a different story all together, it was very windy from the get go here in Sylt. Freestyle got the go ahead frist at around 8:45 but it was still to gusty inside to be able to compete so they went straight out and set a course for slalom. It was very gusty everywhere today with the side off shore winds, the first round of the day was around 12-18 knots over the course area and very choppy. I managed to make it to the finals on my 7.2 RS Racing and 109 JPslalom board, it was a four buoy course and I had a decent start but was so powered I was having a hard time keeping it all together. I could only manage a sixth while Bjoern had a bullet followed by Pieter and Kevin. It was quite cold today so there wasn't a lot of waiting around, straight into the second round of the day. The wind had picked up a bit more but was still very gusty, overpowered like crazy at times and underpowered at the marks at other times. I again made it to the final and was able to move up one spot to fifth while Antoine, Finian and Jimmy were taking the top three spots. The wind continued to get stronger but remained gusty, the race crew dropped two more marks in the water and made it a six buoy course, this would be interesting in these gusty, choppy and cold conditions. Once again I cruised into the final but this time I had a little traffic accident at the first mark and down I went, trying to avoid Pieter as I didn't want to take him out. I was last out of the first mark but then managed to take out my team mate Robby Swift hard at the next mark and finish in ninth. I felt very bad about it as I tried everything to avoid hitting him but it didn't work. He was cool about it as we were both so far back it didn't really matter to much. Up front it was Antoine, Patrick and Kevin taking the first spots. By this time I had been in my wetsuit for five hours and was starting to get cold and tired but they wanted to get the full four rounds in so they went for a half fleet race. I am glad they just pushed the rounds through instead of taking long breaks as I much prefer doing this than sitting around waiting to race. I again cruised to the final but this time the wind had picked up even more, I had a great start but couldn't hold it down to go full speed on the first reach and was pretty deep at the first mark. I just did my best though to make it around the course and slowly picked guys off one by one, in the end I only managed a eighth place finish but that was not bad considering where I was at the first mark. Meanwhile up front Antoine was taking it again followed by Kevin and then Bjoern and that is the way it stands after five rounds. We will see what the forecast brings for tomorrow, looks like wind but lighter at least I hope so this was at least maybe I can race in control. Well early night tonight and I will for sure sleep well tonight and hope for more racing tomorrow in hopes of moving up some more. Oh yeah only two more days left and then back to Maui where it is warm.......

Colgate Pwa Sylt 2007 update 25 nov.2007

It was another long day here in Sylt, for racers and wave sailors. Waves were pretty good this morning at least good enough to run the womens single elimination in light side shore and head high beach break. I was on the beach for the whole elimination helping Junko out as they were pretty far up the beach. It was some of the best women wave riding I have seen at an event, some very close heats and some very nice top and bottom turns. In the final was Iballa M, Nyra A, Junko N, and from germany Steffi Wahl. It was a 20min long four person final and it was very close with Nyra taking the victory. After this the plan was to continue with the men but the wind had backed off again so the men waves and racing went on hold. It looked like racing might be released early but then the wind dropped so it was back to decision making, waves or racing. Waves looked tempting all day but never really materialized so it was off to racing but then the wind died even more so everyone but the women were on hold. It never really came back so we were called off by 5pm and sent home. Tomorrow looks good for racing again so I am sure we will be the priority.

Colgate Pwa Sylt 2007 day one / two

First day in Sylt and no wind, it was quite nice actually to relax a bit with the jet lag and make 110% sure that all my gear was prepared. It was a nice day with light on shore winds and good temperature. After I knew all my gear was ready to go I relaxed a it and caught up with everyone that I hadn't seen in a while. Then with nothing more exciting to do we got Dan Ellis and his girlfriend Jesse, Matt Pearch, Pieter Bijl and myself and I taught or tried to show them as much as knew about Texas hold'em poker. It was quite fun, not much money exchanged hands as we were only playing with 10euro cent pieces and we didn't have many at that. Pieter ended up cleaning up everything and by six o'clock we were released for the day.

Today was a bit more promising with 10-15knots forecast from the South it would be some good racing conditions. Arrival at the beach showed some pretty light winds and after giving it a go at around 11:30 and only getting one heat done before the wind backed off again we sat around and waited. Then at 2:45 we went for it again in about 8-13 knots, it was better than in the morning and we got down to the final and losers final when the wind backed off again. The losers final was first and was cancelled after light winds, we started the final which I made along with Antoine, Pieter, Julien Q, Arnon, Steve A, Ross W, Kevin P, Gonzalo and one more that I can't remember, it was very light before the start and hard to get going especially with the swell, if you didn't get on a swell you were screwed. I know because I got stuck on a swell and was squirted out the back of the pack on the line. I managed to come back to fifth after the first mark but then stopped at the second mark and got passed by everyone but one person. Arnon won the heat by a good margin, I am not sure who was second and so on but I am pretty sure I was ninth. I think the heat should have been cancelled though because it was very light, and after our heat the didn't even get to run the losers final again as the wind died completely. Oh well cest la vie..... tomorrow is another day, it looks like it could be good for waves or freestyle so racing may get another day off. I will let you know how it goes.......

Micah Buzianis Slalom camp - Dahab - Egypt

Just got back to Maui after a week in Dahab, Egypt for the Micah Buzianis Slalom camp presented by JP, The Black Dog, Neil Pryde, Smith Optics and the Harry Nass windsurfing center. There were 24 students and two instructors besides myself. We had wind everyday, not strong every day but we were on the water and everyone had a great time. We also had lots of sun as you might expect from Egypt and temps over 104 every day. This was my first time to Egypt and I would definitely go back, the people there were great as was the food and the location in Dahab was set up perfect for windsurfing and kiting. If you are ever interested check out harry-nass.com this is the place to go. As you can see The Black Dog was every where, the lycras came out very good except for the second i in my last name......Thanks again to The Black Dog for their support, we will all be back there again next year!!!

This was my first time to Costa Brava and I knew I was going to like the place when I was flying in.  The views of the bay and the Pyrenees were awesome from the plane, large mountains in the background gently sloping till they met the sea with large cliffs.  It was a short trip from the Girona airport to the race site, which was held off a camp ground.  All of the competitors stayed close together in bungalows next to the beach.  It was a very nice set up, a bit remote but everything we needed was right there so it was convenient at the same time.  I had heard a lot of mixed reviews of the racing here but most of them had light winds as the general conditions.

Since the winds were generally so light in Costa Brava the PWA planned to race on registration day if there was wind.  This is not the normal practice but here if there was wind they wanted to take advantage of it and at least try to get a result.   The wind slowly built to around 7-12 knots during the registration process so it was decided to go for some racing.  It was quite a steady 7-12knots side on from the right and quite flat, but not always enough for valid racing so it was tough to get heats completed, but with a waning forecast they pushed on.  We only managed to get a few heats done, I did one race on my JP slalom 119 with my 50cm MFC RC and my 9.0 RS Racing.  It was barely enough to stay planning but I managed to advance and that was all I was concerned about.  After that the wind died and it was called for the day.

Second day it was glassy in the morning, which seemed the norm but the forecast was positive so I prepared my 9.0, 8.4 and 7.8 along with my 119 and 109.  About 12 the wind started to come in and we continued where we left off, 12 man heats with the top six advancing.  I made it into the final along with the rest of the favorites like Antoine, Finian, Kevin and Bjoern.  The wind had started to build to a solid 10-20 knots so I was able to get on my 8.4 RS Racing and my 109 JP Slalom with a 42 cm MFC RC, one of my favorite combinations!  I hit the line full speed right at zero, a perfect start and had plenty of speed to make it first at the first mark, from there I had to hold Antoine off who was pushing me on starboard tack but I had speed on him on port.  I crossed the line in first a perfect start to the second event of the season.  There was no messing around from the race crew though as they wanted to take full advantage of the wind so they went straight into another round opting for half fleet races this time.  The wind had built a bit so I had rigged up my 7.2 RS Racing in between the rounds just to be ready.  I switched down from 8.4 to my 7.8 RS Racing for this second round and had plenty of power on my 109 JP Slalom.  Making it through my first heat the finals was going to be all about the start with 24 people on the line, it generally is all about the start but even more so the more people on the line.  I had an ok start but had good speed and managed to come out in third at the first mark behind Antoine and Bjoern, from here it was just a procession to the finish line.  Bjoern took first Antoine second and me in third.  With just enough time to reseed for the next round race director Juan Antonio went straight into another round of half fleet racing.  The wind had started to back off before the start so I went back to my 9.0 RS Racing and my 119 JP slalom.  I made it through my heat and we finished it just in time as the wind dropped and the second heat wasn’t able to finish before being cancelled.  So after two days of racing I was sitting in first place followed by Antoine and Steve Allen.  The forecast for the next couple of days wasn’t looking very positive but it seemed in this place that the forecasts weren’t very accurate and you just had to wait till you got to the beach to see what it was like.

Again we awoke to glassy conditions, luckily the bungalows we were staying in were only 100 meters from the water so it was a short walk to see the conditions and back to bed.  The wind did start to tease around noon so we rigged up and were held on 15 minutes standby all day.  The wind was again around 7-12 knots all day so we did get on the water a couple of times and after many cancelled heats we managed to complete one heat, it was my heat and I made it through on my 9.0 RS Racing and 119 JP slalom with my 48 MFC fin.  It was a very long day and had to be ready at any moment so didn’t get to relax at all, days like this are more draining than racing hard all day.

The fourth day started out glassy again when I woke up around 8am and I thought the forecast was going to hold true, however around 9 the wind started to come up from the left.  It started out slowly but then came up quite fast to a strength that looked like we were going to be on our small stuff all day.  So I rigged everything up and was ready to go, by the time the skippers meeting had rolled around though the wind had backed off again and about half hour later it was gone.  We waited around for more than an hour and then the wind came back, on shore from the right and again 7-12 knots.  We tried hard to get the heats off and after many cancellations four heats were completed from the round that was started yesterday.  I was glad that one of them was my semi final heat and I made it through to the final.  I could relax a bit more for tomorrow knowing that I was already in the final and the forecast was very bad for the next day.

Finally the forecast was right on, the fifth day June 16th was absolutely no wind, we didn’t even have to rig up one sail since the wind wasn’t even teasing.  I just sat around and tried not to think to much about still being in the lead and just try to recharge as much as possible by staying out of the sun and eating good foods.

The final day had arrived and being in the lead I knew I had to have a good day in order to stay on the top with the strong field that was chasing me.  I was already in the final so I was ready to put some more distance between me and the rest of the fleet.  The wind started off light but built quite fast and was already quite windy by the time the final was run.  I was overpowered on my 8.4 RS Racing and my 109 JP Slalom and after a bad start and a fall at the first mark a 9th place finish was not how I wanted to start my day.  Antoine won the heat and was making his move.  The second round I went down to my 7.8 RS Racing as the wind was around 18-30knots.  I was determined to make up for my mistake of the last round, a little to determined as I went over early in the first heat of the next round, ouch!!  I came back to the beach in the worst mood ever as I knew I had just thrown away the event, with only a couple more rounds left to do we would never get a second throw out.  After about a half hour of watching the round and stewing I blew it off and dug in to try and save my event.  I had to play it a bit safe and not have any more big numbers and quietly made it to the next final, but with caution in the back of my mind I could only safely cruise to a fourth place finish.  Enough to keep me in the hunt for second but still needed one more good number.  The last round of the day and the event was the half fleet race that was started but never finished(Officially round 3).  I again made it to the final and again had a safe fourth place finish but I did beat the people I had to and it was enough to finish in second place.  A disappointing second but after my start on this final day it could have been a lot worse.  Antoine didn’t even have to race the last round as he had already won the event no matter what he did in the final round.  Bjoern also had a less than stellar day for his standards but still managed to finish overall in third.

It was another tough race with the gusty, light conditions as well as strong, gusty conditions the equipment was on the small side at times and on the big side at times.  Really pushed the envelope of the Slalom 42 concept but it is truly amazing the range that my gear has right now.  In 7-10 knots I could race 100% on my 9.0 RS Racing and my 119 JP Slalom and on the other end in the 18-30 knots I could race with my 7.8 RS Racing and 109 JP Slalom, I was overpowered but it wasn’t unmanageable.  The gear has come along way and continues to amaze me at what it can handle.  I really enjoyed Costa Brava in the end even though I didn’t finish where I wanted to.  It is a beautiful spot and I truly look forward to coming back again next year, hopefully with a bit more stable wind though;)

All the best
